With one challenge down and three still to come it’s time to step things up. Up until now my focus has been on losing weight and making lifestyle changes to make that weight loss perminant.

But that’s not enough if I want to run a six minute mile.

It’s time to start getting serious about getting fit. That’s not gym fit, I mean proper fit. 

It’s time to start building an aerobic engine and put some power into my legs again. 

Welcome the new member of the family. I’ve got myself a bike! 

The lovely Anita Sheehan is putting together a training plan for me as I type but the bike will be playing a big part in my fitness regime.

It’s roughly 14 miles from my house to the office, so let’s starting biking that a couple of times a week.

That simple lifestyle choice will do a few things….

  1. It will burn a shite load of calories.
  2. It will put some real strength in my legs and my core.
  3. It will improve my aerobic engine, and then some.
 

The gym will be there for strength and conditioning work, and then of course I’ll be running a couple of times a week, throwing in a couple of park runs a month to keep track on progress.

Why I AM doing this...

It seems to me that every bit of news these days is bad. Maybe we’ve forgotten just how wonderful our country is, just how wonderful the people in it are, and our capacity for being a bit mad.

A few months ago I was morbidly obese. Today I’m just obese. But next year I plan on being fit, toned and healthy. Like all good sales people I need a target. I need to be challenged and I need a real reason to get my fat backside out there and train. The second half of 2025 has been consumed with losing weight. The year of 2026 will be consumed with training, scaring myself half to death, and getting fit again.

Can a 54 year old really go from 23 1/2 stone to running a six minute mile within a year?
